Vector icons on Iconfinder

You might have noticed vector icons showing up on Iconfinder. Some days ago we released an update with the support for vector icons and have started adding new icons in SVG format.

This is probably the most requested feature on Iconfinder: support for vector icons. It’s wonderful to finally be able to add tons on icons in nice scalable versions.¬†We have decided to make SVG format the default file format for vector icons. It’s the widely supported all modern browsers and since SVG is an XML-based file format, it’s possible to manipulate them from e.g. JavaScript. Read more about SVG here: Scalable Vector Graphics.

Even though icons are uploaded in SVG format, you will still be able to download them in PNG directly from the site. When icons are uploaded in SVG files, we’ll do conversion to PNG, ICNS and ICO automatically and all you have to do is click the link of the format you need.

What format do you prefer for vector icons? SVG, AI, EPS or PSD?

How to open icons in Photoshop

Photoshop does not allow you to open SVG files. You have to have a program such as Illustrator to open the file. Select the vector icons and copy it to your clip-board. Go to Photoshop and paste it into an open document. Now select Shape layer. The icon is now available in your Photoshop document in a nice scalable vector format.

  1. Awesome news. The features and UI of iconfinder are second to none. This additional features pushes the icon selection further ahead of the competition. SVG format looks great and is progressive. I’ll be using this format very soon!
