In this post we’ll highlight four of our favourite weather apps. Each quite different from the next.

It’s fucking cloudy now — Authentic Weather

By Tobias van Schneiderhttp://authenticweather.com/

authentic

Authentic Weather is just one of those apps. One of those provocative, weird and delightful apps you show off to your friends. “Check this out…” and everyone laughs for a minute and wants to know what it is and how it works. And it really is both fun and cool. Loud but simple at the same time. The main focus is the descriptive sentence with the icons mainly serving as weight in the top.

The only real issue with Authentic Weather is, that it absolutely doesn’t fucking help you deal with situation outside. But it is a fucking nice little app.

Flickr powered beauty — Yahoo Weather

By Yahoo — http://weather.yahoo.com/

yahoo

The new Yahoo Weather is probably one of the most talked about apps in the design community in past six months. With a stunning new elegant design using backgrounds provided by Flickr users and great use of line icons, Yahoo Weather fits in perfectly with the upcoming iOS 7. In fact the app won one the coveted Apple Design Award at the WWDC in june. Apple design watchers also noticed that Apple’s own weather app updated for iOS 7 bares a remarkable resemblance to the one from Yahoo. But one can see why Apple might have felt inspired by Yahoo. Gorgeous.

Weather with a soundtrack — Haze

By Robocat — http://gethaze.com/

haze

Haze by Robocat is one of the most beautiful apps in the App Store. The elegant use of lighting, dynamic backgrounds and subtle animation with perfect easing makes checking the outside temperature a wonderful experience. And then when you take you phone of silence and discover that the app also comes with a set of amazing sound effects, the experience is turned all the way up to eleven.

It feels like Robocat took a good look at Clear (http://www.realmacsoftware.com/clear) and then decided to one up that.

Accurate simplicity — Byvejret (City Weather)

By Woerk

city

While the app is not exactly ugly, it certainly isn’t as cutting edge as the other three. So why is it noteworthy. Simple, accuracy and usability. Boring? Yes but after all, the main purpose of a weather app is to guide you through the magical mystery of your local climate and whether or not pack an umbrella before you head off to the office. This does exactly that. Using the best data (or magic) it gives you all the weather info you need. And it does it in a way that balances the right amount of information and a simple layout very well. So while it might be a bit dull compared to the other three, it thrives by actually being a really good app. A great tool and a design where the elements nicely laid out and the icons are used for making the information easier to decode.

Note: The reason that you have never heard of this app, is that it is marketed in Denmark and is only localised to Danish and English. But it works in all major cities, so check it out.
